He becomes the center of our “religious or spiritual” life. We fail to involve or incorporate Him into other aspects of our life. What is the fruit of revival? Restoration and a reinvigorated commitment to the Lord resulting in real life change and transformation. The fruit is also seen by lost people coming to Christ as a result of the impact upon the church. That is because true revival is transformational to individuals, families, churches and communities. Real revival endures. Bible precedents reveal that the generation that experiences genuine revival sees the impact and effect of revival throughout their life time. In other words, real revival isn’t transitory but lasting; reaching, influencing and impacting generations. So what took place at LBC? We've yet to see the lasting impact but this we do know. We enjoyed the fellowship of God’s Spirit as well as that of His people. We heard the Word of God boldly proclaimed, and witnessed people responding to the Spirit. Praise God for His immeasurable goodness!

From My Heart to Yours

God has, in Christ, provided not only for our forgiveness and redemption; Paul prays that the church at Ephesus might come to know more fully God’s grace, love, strength and knowledge. In essence, he prays that they might come to a fullness of God that will empower and enable them to do even beyond all that they can imagine. Could it be that we have a myopic view for what God can do here at LBC and in the Anderson area? All necessary for life and fruitfulness is provided through Him. There are times that I make the attempt to do the work of God in my strength and find myself discouraged and dissuaded rather quickly. Despondency and despair attack many believers who strive to do God’s work and fulfill God’s purpose in their own wisdom, ability and power. Paul reminds us that it is Christ who strengthens us; that the life we now live as Christians we are to live by the faith of Christ and in the power of Christ. Revival is a work of God and if we are to realize it, then we must position ourselves to receive it and wait upon God to deliver it in His time and for His glory and purpose. Love, joy and peace are to epitomize the attitude and life of the believer, but sin that is not confessed, or self dependency rather than God dependency will rob us of them.

From My Heart to Yours

Too many are living under the influence of the flesh rather than the influence of the Spirit. But what does that mean? We’ve been talking about the need for Revival; praying that God will graciously send it down to us. Yet too often we look for Revival without meeting the conditions. Those conditions are spelled out for us in the Word of God. We use that phrase quite often, but our actions often reveal an unwillingness to heed. We hear what God is saying, but are we really listening. Jesus told the religious leaders of His day that they were reading but not heeding the Word of God. Daily reading and memorization are commendable, but useless unless we take their teaching to heart and make the life application. The Bible is God’s Holy Word, and we need to be listening to what it is saying to the intent of putting it into action in our lives. In a day when each of us is so busy, we are tempted often to think that busyness is unique to this generation. And I’m sure that with all that we today can fill our day with, it would seem that this is true. Yet the Patriarchs had twenty-four hours, just as we do today. It’s not a matter of needing more time; it’s a matter of management and priority. Jesus is calling the lost to be saved, and the saved to follow Him into the fields. Even during the time of His earthly ministry, Jesus sought those who would faithfully follow Him into the Father’s work; to go into the field of the world with the message of God’s love for all mankind. Then as now, there were many who gave reasons as to why they could not follow at that time. There were those that desired to follow, but the priorities in their lives were obstacles to their immediate obedience. The offer to follow and serve is still presented to those who will hear and heed it. We pray for Revival, but revival, if God chooses to send it, causes us to reflect and reprioritize our life and seek His will above our will. It calls us to submissive obedience by deferring our will to His.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lbcconnection.blogspot.com/2011/09/from-my-heart-to-yours-sept-25-2011.html' title='From My Heart to Yours... Recent disasters and economic upheavals have people seeking for answers and peace. Jesus came at a such a time. The prophet Isaiah stated that the people that walked in darkness, in the shadow of death would see the light of the promised Messiah. Today, people are looking for that light. Jesus is the one who offers not only forgiveness, but love, peace and joy. The world is crying out for answers, and Jesus is that answer. We as a church need to be engaged in the work of the Great Commission. We need to understand and realize all that we have in Christ, and then to be ready to share it with a world desperate to hear. Our prayers for Revival are offered to place us in the position to receive it so that we can in turn, share it with those around us. In a time of uncertainty, they need to hear of the unfailing, unchanging and loving God that seeks to save. In a world that seems to be running from God, it is time that we stand in the gap and point them to Christ. God is calling out, inviting us to look to Him; to come to Him and find peace, joy and rest. Won’t you join Him to get the message out to a world desperate for Him?

<span style="font-family: Times; We as a nation are remembering the tragic events of ten years ago; when our nation was attacked by terrorists. We want to commemorate the fallen. Many of those who died were first responders, and the heroic passengers of Flight 93 who thwarted the efforts of the terrorist who had taken over control of the plane and kept them from hitting their target. We very much want to respect their efforts and honor their lives. Yet I find it puzzling that while we want to make effort to honor them, many have chosen to refuse clergymen and prayer to be a part of that effort. The terrorist were acting on a misguided and mistaken faith that led them to take innocent lives in the name of their God. Many were inspired by the cross made up of the twisted steel of what used to be the World Trade Center. For the past ten years, our nation has been at war on various fronts. As a church, we pray for our troops and for victory. Our nation has also been in the midst of a serious economic downturn and as a church; we pray that things turn around so that the millions out of work and hurting will once again find their footing. Yet our nation and some of her leaders choose to limit or restrict the people to pray in the name of Jesus. So we as a church pray for our nation and her leaders. We pray that they may they come to know Him and heed His Word and lead us according to His truth.

August 28 From My Heart to Yours...

<span style="font-family: Times; a moral, economic, societal mess that transcends borders to make it pandemic. It is a pandemic mess! And it is obvious that much of the world is antagonistic toward the message of Christ. Why? Because the gospel message of Christ transforms people and therefore, societies and cultures. Those in power who embrace culture and traditions that empower them are not giving them up easily. When the gospel turned the city upside down, the Silversmith Union rose up opposing Paul and the message. When Peter healed the cripple and the city of <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Jerusalem</place></city> was being turned upside down by the events of the cross and subsequent resurrection, the religious leaders opposed the apostles. <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Rome</place></city> opposed Christianity as well, as have countless other religions and pseudo Christian imposters who in the name of Christ or God became totalitarian and persecuted all who opposed their rule. Yet today as then, God empowers and emboldens His people for the task to which He has called them. As the early church prayed for boldness, so too we can pray for a fresh boldness and empowering of God’s Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose for us.

August 21 From My Heart to Yours...

Repentance and faith in Jesus Christ brings us to the place of forgiveness, salvation and eternal life. Repentance is also what is needed when we find ourselves in a desperate need for Revival and Restoration. The problem too often is pride or selfish indulgence. Jesus in <bible reference="Bible.Jn3.19-20" w:st="on">John 3:19-20</bible> states; “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” Some then refuse to repent and come to Christ because they embrace the sin in their life rather than turn from it. Others refuse to admit their offence and choose to ignore it or rationalize it rather than confess it. Salvation, restoration and revival come when we are willing to admit or confess our sin and turn to God. Admitting our need and our guilt are necessary steps; they can’t be avoided or substituted with something religious or noble. That places the problem in the realm of human pride. If we truly seek to experience revival, then we must be willing to take the steps God has established in order to receive it from His hand.

August 14, 2011

" As a result, the relationship went from one of joy and fellowship, to one of grief and judgment. When we see this nation, we shake our heads in wonder. Yet just like the nation of Israel, there are many who through faith in Christ have entered into a personal relationship with God. It too is a covenant relationship. Yet it seems that there are many who forsake their love and loyalty to Christ, a relationship made possible by His death upon Calvary, to indulge themselves in other passions and pursuits; to follow after gods of their own making. In light of Calvary’s cross, is this not also something to cause us to wonder? Let’s examine our relationship to God and renew our commitment to Him. Let us not repeat Israel’s error, but stay true to Him Who loved us and saved us from our sin by becoming our Substitute. He is deserving of our love and our loyalty. Lord send a revival!

Called and Sent

<span style="font-family: Times; an ideological battle that is driven by passion on each side. We see that in the fiscal debate that has taken center stage in our nation. But what is at stake is more than just our economic well being as a nation, but our national moral and spiritual well being as well. Adam’s race always seeks to do what they consider right in their eyes. The problem is that we are not all wise and all knowing. People ought to seek out God who is all of that and more. That He has our best interest at heart is seen in the fact that He has sent prophets and teachers to show us the way; and in the end, He sent His Son to make the way. It is His passion and purpose to save us from ourselves. If we are to prosper, then we must seek and apply His wisdom and walk in His way. That God is all knowing is seen in His call of Jeremiah. It is a call we see in the lives of others in Scripture whom God chooses to use to reach the lost of humanity, and to right the course of a nation. (Emphasis mine) We have all seen many that have made a profession of faith only to see them falter and quit. Some even go so far as to renounce their faith altogether. These were never really saved at all, but merely sought to have reformation of their life and situation apart from the real transforming power of God that comes by faith in Christ and the enabling presence of the Holy Spirit. Are you transformed or merely reformed?

April 10th From My Heart to Yours...

<span style="font-size: 11pt; Too often we lose sight of the awe and wonder of worship. Consider that the God of all Creation become a man and died for you and me. He rose again, purchasing and procuring our salvation and redemption and is preparing a place for us in Heaven to be with Him. Now that is reason to Worship; As the nation heralded the coming of the Messiah the religious leaders told Jesus to command that He stop them from shouting and carrying on so. Jesus replied that if the crowds hushed their hosanah's, that the very rocks would cry out. Why is that? Because this was the fulfillment of a prophecy we find in Zechariah 9:9. It was a sign given to identify and authenticate that He was indeed that Messiah that would come. John the Baptist proclaimed Him to be the Son that takes away the sin of the world. The message of Easter is about the King of Kings who came to die as a sacrifice and payment for the sins of all humanity. His resurrection is the basis for our justifcation and redemption. This is why we sing and celebrate Easter.

<h2 align="left" style="margin: 0in 0in 6pt; We strive to be better in health, better in our mindset and attitude as well as in our relationships and citizenship. We want to change our ways. The problem is that we see a need for conformity to our plan of action. But conformation, bringing the process of one thing into accord with another, isn’t what we’re to strive to achieve. Rather it is transformation that is needed. Conforming is outward whereas transformation is an inward process. The caterpillar changes because of its inward makeup, not because it makes a willful decision to look like a butterfly and be the butterfly. As Christians, we are born again, or anew. We are a new creation and the Holy Spirit begins our transformation into Christ likeness. That’s what real faith does. It leads us from just outward show and conformity, to transformation; a metamorphous into something different. We need to make sure that we aren’t getting in the way of the Spirit’s work by resisting or quenching the Spirit. We are to submit to the transformation; this work of God in us that brings us to look, think, and act like Christ.

A Ready Faith

Many desire to be used of God in order to make a difference. The problem is that we get bored with waiting or fearful when confronted with a daunting task or situation. When we look in the Bible at the people God used to make a difference and impact the world for Him, we see commonalities. We see unquestionable faith, reliance and sub-mission to His leadership and will for their lives. People like Joseph, Daniel, the servant girl who told her master about the prophet that could heal his leprosy; or a slave who became a Prince of Egypt who would later reject that path to follow God’s plan to lead Israel from bondage. Moses became a great leader, but not without heartache or ruin. If we want to have that kind of influence upon the world for Christ, then it means having a focused faith as well as a courageous walk. It also means to be alert and aware of opportunities to step up when called. We, as servants, need to be ready.

VERSE OF THE WEEK: My Heart is fixed, O God, My heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise! Psalm 57:7

Share the Christmas Message

The Christmas message is one of hope and joy. God has provided the means and way of salvation. What sinful man could not do, God has done. He has provided the means and way to Heaven through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is good news indeed. Had He left us in the state in which we were, then there would be no hope of eternal life; no hope of Heaven. But because God took upon Himself our sins, He has redeemed us and forgiven us from our sins. When we trust Jesus and claim Him as Savior, we are forgiven and headed for Heaven. The proclamation is to go out. Just as the angels sang the night that Jesus was born, so too are we to sing out the message and praise of salvation. God invites us to come to Him; the angels of God beckon we come to Him and we who are saved are to call out to the lost that they might consider and turn to Him. How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

VERSE OF THE WEEK font-size: large;">We call this season, the season of giving. This isn’t because of the exchanging of gifts; that is what it has come to mean. The “Spirit of Giving” comes from a loving and merciful God who gave His only Son. Apart from that gift, there would be no salvation; there would be no peace or joy; there would be no evidence of goodwill but only holy and righteous judgment from a Holy and Righteous Judge. That God cared enough, loved enough to sacrifice Himself is testimony of His love and compassion for us. Judicial holiness must be satisfied and that satisfaction came at the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross. That is why this is the season of giving. It is our responsibility to take and share this gift with the world. It’s amazing that as Jesus looked unto fields full of ripe grain, His prayer was not for the harvest, but for laborers. There are many who are searching for peach and purpose. True peace and purpose can only be found in Christ. Only God could accomplish that. We are also woefully inadequate in our own strength to grow and serve God apart from Him. Jesus said that apart from Him we can do nothing. (John 15:5) So why is it that we seem to pride ourselves on our independence? What we need, individually and corporately, is ultradependence upon God. We need to move away from self-centered thinking and power, to a focus on the Holy Spirit and His enabling and empowering work. It is God that works in us to will and to do His Will. (Phil 2:13). So it behooves us to follow the leadership of His Spirit. But too often, rather than obediently following, we resist; and it is that resistance to the Holy Spirit that causes not growth, but spiritual atrophy. If we would grow and serve God, then we must listen to His voice and follow His direction, both individually and as a church.

Hindrances to Growth and Service

Many things can hinder our Christian growth and ability to worship and serve Jesus Christ effectively. We all have an area or areas in our life that needs special attention and application of discipline so that we are not hindered in our daily race. It differs for each person, for one persons strength may be another one’s weakness. But we all have areas that are weak that could use strengthening. The danger is in thinking that all we need to do is offset this weakness with one of our strengths. But when it comes to Holy Living, trying to offset sinfulness or ungodliness with righteousness and holiness is ineffective and trips us up in our living for the Lord. This is because godliness and holiness is corrupted by sinfulness and selfishness. They don’t just weigh us down; they trip us up so that we ineffectually run the race. font-size: large;">There are things that tend to steal our passion and focus; hindrances to personal growth and worship. It is incumbent that each believer take an introspective look to root out those things that would bleed off our passion and love for Christ and get them arranged in proper priority so that Christ has first place. This isn’t easy, and it takes focus. God had given the nation of Israel a holy feast to emphasize the importance of removing hindrances of fellowship with Him. During the feast of unleavened bread, families would purge out all the leaven from within the house. Even the children would get involved to find and remove that which symbolically represented sin. It is sin which separates and diminishes our fellowship with God. Jesus opened the way to God by the blood He shed for our sins. font-size: large;">The Why of Worship can be answered in the simple statement Jesus made to His disciples when He said, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you…” Now don’t misunderstand. God has given us freewill and the opportunity to exercise is by accepting His invitation to salvation. But that invitation must be extended. God chose to save us; He didn’t have to do it. Isn’t it amazing that the Holy, Sinless, Perfect and All Powerful God chose to save us from our sin. The emphasis isn’t on our ability to choose, but rather that we have the opportunity to choose. That fact when coupled with the Person of God should answer for us the question of the Why of Worship. We worship Him because He is God and has by grace, chosen to save us from our sins. On top of that, we are not just servants, but children of God and heirs with Christ. He has taken the dirty rags full or corruption and sin, and clothed us with His robe of righteousness. He has cleansed us, saved us, and redeemed us by His blood! That is the Why of Worship! Praise God for His wonderful and marvelous grace.

Reflections on Worship

A. W. Tozer said, “What you think of God is the most important thing about you.” Norman Geisler states, “Our concept of God will have a marked effect on our practical lives…our concept of God will, therefore, define the limits of our godliness.” We will become like those or the one we worship. The word, worship, is defined as esteemed or to be of great worth and value; to be venerated and held in awe. To bow and pay respect and homage to the one who is the focus of our worship. There is no question that we are to worship the Lord and hold him in high esteem. We are to focus upon Him, adore Him, love Him and obey Him. That is the true essence of worship. If our lives lack holiness and godliness it is because we are not truly worshipping God for Who He is. We may be worshipping our concept or idea of God, but not the God that is; because true worship reflects its object back in the life of the worshipper. Those who worship God in truth, become more like Him. When you look at your life, what or who do you see?

Be Teachable

The first lesson of keeping a faith focus had to do with defining and prioritizing the relationships in life. This is key to walking the walk of faith with integrity. Last week we covered the only foundational relationship upon which all the rest of our relationships and life is to be built upon; that foundational relationship is found only in Christ. From this personal and intimate relationship all others are built and established. Therefore it is important that we make Christ the central and imperative relationship in our life. Too often we lose sight of this fact; that He is to take first priority. When that happens we lose our focus and way.

The second lesson of keeping a Faith Focus is learning what it means to being teachable; to learn from our successes as well as from our failures. God’s children sometimes are wounded by their own sinful actions and remain inactive and guilt ridden rather than finding forgiveness and an impetus for growth and positive action for their lives and for the Kingdom of God. Others become wounded by circumstances or situations outside of their control or doing, and find themselves bitter or discouraged and begin to waver in their passion and commitmnt. Stll others are simply stubborn and rebellious, refusing to confess their wrongful acts. All of these are disruptive to a positive Faith Focus of a life that glorifies God. Only by learning the lessons of life and growing in our knowledge and intimacy with God can we maintain a good faith walk; one that glorifies God and possesses an interity based upon faithfulness, obedience and confidence in Christ.

Friendship and Faithwalk

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; Too many today compartmentalize their lives topically; this belongs to work, this to church, and this to family. The truth is that our faith in Christ is to permeate every facet of our life; filling every nook and cranny so to speak. Some today rationalize away their friendship and associations as not belonging to the sacred aspect of life, but rather their secular aspect. coming away usually having compromised and losing their influence and ability to impact their world for Christ. Jehosaphat learned that lesson when he tried to enter into an association with Ahab. font-size: large;">Faith Focus means defining the relationships in your life that are key to walking the walk of faith with integrity. We covered the foundational relationship that is only found in Christ. From that personal and intimate relationship, all our other relationships must be built. It is important that we make Christ the central and imperative relationship. Too often we lose sight that He is to take first priority, thereby losing our focus and way as we live our life out here on Earth. The second lesson of keeping our Faith Focus is on being teachable as well as learning from our mistakes. God’s children sometimes are wounded by their own sinful actions and remain inactive and guilt ridden rather than finding forgiveness and impetus for growth and positive action for the Kingdom of God. Others become stubborn and rebellious, refusing to confess their wrongful acts. Both are disruptive to a positive Faith Focus of a life that glorifies God.

Faith Focus

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; Too many today don’t see themselves as leaders and minimize the im-pact of their life upon others or upon the overall Kingdom of God. Dorcas shatters that myth. This one woman, because of her faithfulness and love, set in motion a sequence of events that resulted in the beginning of a great missionary movement in her day. It wasn’t so much a work of Dorcas, but rather the work of God through her. It was her faithfulness and ministry that put all these things in motion. It was her life impact that set up a sequence of events that God would use to open the hearts of the Jews to the nations. Hers is a life story of faithfulness and love. And though she never went to the foreign field; her devotion to others and to the ministry she performed was something God could use to further His kingdom and grow His people.

Godly leadership

Godly leaders come to rely not upon their own ability and authority, but rather that of God. Zerubbabel was a governor of an oppressed and weak people. God sent Haggai to speak words of encouragement to him as well as Joshua, the High Priest. At a time when the nation had returned back to the land of promise, the people had grown slack spiritually. The reforms of revival were often short lived as people went about their daily task. The people were also haunted by past glory that caused them to be mournful and defeated. These two men were called to be leaders of the demoralized nation; a daunting task. In difficult times, God provides leaders to lead His people. He equips those leaders with the talents and abilities to rise to the occasion to meet the need. Moses and Joshua were such leaders, as was Joseph and Daniel. Some believe that spiritual leadership and examples are set by preachers. It is interesting to note that Zerabbabel was a civil servant. He wasn’t a priest or prophet. God uses men and women who come with diverse histories and backgrounds to accomplish His purpose. If God used them, He can use you today.

He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Matthew 10:39

Clear Expectations

Good leadership defines expectations for both sides of the relationship. Last week we discussed some of the expectations Christ has as He sends us out into the world. Today, we look at the expectations and price that we can expect to meet as we obey. Too many enter into discipleship and service with expectations that are askew. We need to understand the price of discipleship as well as the hardships that can be associated with serving Jesus Christ in a world that so desperately needs Him yet is opposed to Him, His teachings and consequently His people. We are not to be fearful nor slack in our responsibility, but aware that opposition will come. This knowledge keeps us from being unsettled or overwhelmed when we meet up with opposition. It keeps us focused and on task as we accomplish God’s purpose. As we serve the Lord, let us not only remember the cost and expectations that come with serving Him, but also with the reward that is sure to come as well.

Design or Chance?

There is a war taking place for the soul of America<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; that all that is was created by God. New evidences support that the universe has a beginning. That means that there is a cause; and that cause is God and His creative work. Romans 1 tells us that this is part of what theologians call General Revelation. The Bible is replete with passages that refer to God's creative acts and their witness of His majesty and power. Faith begins in a confident knowing and believing that God is; and that through Jesus Christ, He is approachable. How important is it that we teach our children about the creation? Extremely!

March 21, 2010

We had a great time of fellowship and revival services this past week with Brother Luellen. He presented challenging messages that I pray we will take to heart and make proper application. Revival begins with one, and sometimes spreads throughout a church and community. I am praying that we have indeed experienced personal revival that will impact the decisions we make and direction we take for the rest of our lives. As we gather together, let us remember that one can make a difference in his day. Josiah brought about reforms even though he knew from God that it would not avert the inevitable judgment coming upon the nation.

And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. I am hoping that each of our members have been faithfully praying and preparing their hearts to receive the blessings of Revival that we have been praying for over the course of the past few weeks. Brother Luellen, pastor of Hyde Park Missionary Baptist Church in West Monroe, Louisiana will be our speaker.

Revival comes from God when God’s people meet the conditions to receive it. If all we are doing is having a series of meetings then we can expect little in the way of Revival. But if we come with the anticipation of being in God’s presence, of being challenged by the Word of God to the end of life change and life commitment to service, then Revival will come. Revival is not a time of year we mark on the calendar, but rather an dramatic life changing experience that moves us closer to God and a commitment to serving Him. It is my prayer that we have indeed prepared our hearts and are fully expecting God to do something in our hearts, our church, and our community.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; We need to meet the criteria of Revival: recognition, repentance, reconciliation and rededication. Revival comes when God’s people meet the conditions He sets forth in His Word. Let’s focus through prayer and fasting on meeting those conditions. If we are to make the impact upon our community that will impact lives and the Kingdom of God, then we must begin in our hearts and homes. Our actions may not seem like much, and they may not have an immediate impact. We never know the results until the effects of personal revival are seen in the lives of others who are closest to us. We see this evident in the life of Manasseh. Although his life in the beginning did not reflect that of his father, Hezekiah, he found redemption and reconciliation. His attempts at national revival didn’t impact many in his life time, but they did impact his grandson, Josiah.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-variant: small-caps; The training of children is the responsibility of parents. Parents can avail themselves of the resources of a local New Testament church but they can’t abscond and relinquish their responsibilities as parents. Parents are the primary teachers of their children. The National Study of Youth and Religion found that “the single most important social influence on the religion and spiritual lives of adolescents is their parents.” So how do we go about to train and raise our children. We’ve been looking at this for the past several weeks, and look to continue to build upon those lessons and give practical guidance to help parents to have a life of influence that impacts the hearts and lives of their children. The Bible gives insights and instruction into parenting in both the Old Testament and New Testament that when followed, maximizes the impact upon the lives of children and teenagers. Now I don’t believe that will ever happen because of the Person, Power and Purposes of God. He is faithful and His purpose will be accomplished. But the gist of the thought is this; if our nation is to continue as a Christian nation, then the Christian parents and grandparents of today better do a good job to teach and train the generation of tomorrow. The problem is that there are too many “Casual” Christians that just aren’t showing up when it comes to not just teaching the faith, but living it as Captive Christians. What does it take to be the kind of parent or grandparent that impacts the coming generation for Christ and mentors what faith is in their daily life? We find out the answer in our study of the lives of Abraham and Lot. George Barna in one of his books divides Americans into what he calls tribal groups. Two of those groups identify Christians. There are the casual Christians and then there are the captive Christians. This latter group lives their lives devoted to Christ even when it might cost them. The Bible defines this group as disciples; those willing to take up their cross and follow Him. Comfort isn’t their focus, obedience to Jesus is. So how do we begin to move toward true discipleship? It begins with a firm understanding of Who Jesus is followed by a confidence in knowing where we stand with Him. Those who are clearly founded on these are in a more stable position to move beyond a casual to a captive relationship.

It isn't so much about what us as much as it is about Him. Many come to Christ not because of Who He is, but because of what He has to offer. Although we have a desire to be saved from sin, we are willing to be captive to Christ because we are captivated by Him. Jesus, the Creator and Sustainer of all that is came to this world to die for us as payment for our sins. Who He is as well as His love for us is what captivates our hearts and brings us to submit our wills to Him. It is this proper understanding of Who Jesus is. His love for us and our love for Him that fosters the desire to live for Him; to become Captive Christians.

Prioritizing Goals

What is our goal and purpose for the coming year? It is to make our lives count for Christ. May this be the year that people come to glorify God because of our witness and outreach. It is rather obvious that we are living in difficult days and that people are searching for answers. We have the answer in Jesus Christ. This year our focus continues to be on our personal outreach into the community as well as our corporate outreach through our ministries at Landmark. We can make a difference for the cause of Christ if we will focus on Kingdom principles and needs. But all this begins with a personal commitment to be Christ focused and centered. We also want to reaffirm that we as a church are ministering to and strengthening families in our church and neighborhoods. We do this by knowing what God’s Word teaches concerning family and then matching knowledge with action. The challenge was made last week to speak to one person a week about Jesus. This is an attainable goal. Let’s begin by praying for the coming week and the contacts and witness for Christ that will be made. May God give us fruit for our labors.

Reflections on the Season

As a boy, I remember always feeling like I was on the outside looking in; that I never truly belonged; that I was out of place. There are a variety of reasons for this. My isolation was a lonely feeling. Before long, I convinced myself that it was what I wanted, but it was only self deception. Man was created for companionship not isolation. Loneliness is a harbinger of a deeper hunger; stronger than just wanting to belong, it was the hunger to be loved and to feel love. One day Jesus spoke to my heart, breaking through the isolation and the walls I had built up to protect my heart from the hurt. I learned that He loved me and wanted me to belong to Him. He wanted me to live with Him forever. He wanted to heal the pain and the hurt and embrace me. There are many people who are hurting at this time of year. The holidays extenuate their loss and lonliness. People tend to be more depressed more at this time of year. Funeral homes report that their volume of business increases as well. People feel as if they are on the outside looking in and wanting to belong. So how can we help as a church? This year let us continue to strive… to excel in making it our goal to see that people come to know that Jesus cares and wants them to belong. Let us insure that we care and want them to belong as we reach out. The Thanksgiving and Christmas season is more than knowing you belong... it is knowing you are loved.

Be Thankful...

We live in troubled times; times of bleak economic news; times of unrest and uncertainty; times that portend the possibility of greater pressures our family as well as the family of faith. Make no mistake; we are a divided nation, politically, idiologically and morally. It seems that our nation is fighting for its very identity and soul. And it seems that these troubled times portend a potential for greater pressures against those who hold to the name of Christ. Yet these are not times unique to our generation alone. We are not facing anything that others before us have not faced in one form or another.

Our faith and confidence in Christ isn’t dependent upon the winds of change or unrest but upon the certainty of Christ’s love, sacrifice and victory. For this reason the Bible teaches us to rest in Him and to be thankful... in all things. Have you considered that the New Testament writers wrote during times of difficulty and persecution to those who called themselves Christians? It wasn’t written during times of ease or peace, but in the crucible fires of persecution that tested their faith and commitment. Our forefathers in the faith, both in the first century of Christianity and in the birthing of our nation, suffered through economic hardships as well as physical persecutions. Yet they were encouraged to be thankful and to bring honor, glory and praise to Almighty God. So how do we go about that? We do so by remembering all we have in Christ, especially in His resurrection. We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us and gave Himself for us. We persevere in faith, knowing that there awaits a day when trials, tribulations, persectutions and oppression shall pass. We look with expectancy and assurance that there is coming a day when He will return; when Peace will be established; when righteousness shall rule. In the meantime, we give thanks... thanks for all we have in Christ and have been given in Him. We give thanks... for the hopeful and absolute expectation of His coming... We worship with praise and assurance in our hearts... We serve knowing that it is what He would have us do because He led the way... We pray for the coming day that all will be made right to His glory and praise.

Be Grateful and Wise

The old warrior leader, Joshua, challenged the people to make a choice as to whom they would serve. He had made his choice and reaffirmed it before the nation. “… as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Accepting Jesus as Savior, and committing to following Him in our daily life is a choice. To men like Peter, Paul and Bartimaeus, the choice to commit one’s life to following Jesus was reasonable in light of what Jesus has done for us. A life dedicated to following Jesus isn’t a life wasted, but rather a life invested. Making the commitment to following Jesus is the wise choice. It is the grateful choice. Jesus Christ purchased our salvation, redeeming and freeing us from sin, death and the grave. Paul cautions the Roman saints to use liberty as license to sin; use your liberty to follow the Lord. Bartimaeus did all he could to get the attention of Jesus. His voice rose above the crowd; their advice and angst in order to bring his petition before the Lord. When Jesus asked what he wanted, Bartimaeus asked for life change. Jesus responded, "Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole". Blind Barimaeus had life change that day. No more would he have to beg for a living. For the first time, he could make choices that heretofore were not available to him. What would he choose to do with his life not that he could see... not that he was normal? The Scriptures tell us. "And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way." This formerly blind man who had a new lease on life, made the grateful and wise choice.

Be Available

Available: The word is defined as suitable or ready for use; of use or service; at hand: I used whatever tools were available. 2. readily obtainable; accessible: available resources...

We need to be available for God. Too often we allow our fear or personal agenda and focus to make us unavailable to God’s call and service. We excuse ourselves from committing ourselves to a course of service and action for God because we aren’t ready to make such a decision or move. It could be business or family or perhaps even fear that keeps us from being available to God. (See Matthew 8). God seeks those willing to answer His call; those who make themselves fit and available for service to Him. We give them little thought or reflection of the ramification or definitions of those words. Take the word “redeemed”. Too often we think of it in terms of liberty. But to be redeemed means that we’ve been purchased by the one who redeemed us. Paul reminded the Corinthian saints about that very thing. Peter too reminds his readers that they have been redeemed not by gold, silver or precious stones, but by the blood of Jesus. Too often, we feel that our redemption means we can live as we want. We make choices without more than a token thought about God’s Word or will. We treat redemption like emancipation. But that which is redeemed is the purchased possession of the one who redeemed it. We are not our own. We are freed and redeemed from sin and are now the servants of God. We are to fulfill His will and purpose. This is exactly what God told Moses to speak to Israel and to Pharaoh. Let my people go that they may serve me. This isn't a verbal commitment but one that is proven throughout life by our actions. One man stated that it isn't your profession, but rather your pursuit of Jesus that makes all of the difference. Our commitment to Jesus should be such that no matter what we face, our resolve and loyalty will remain the same. The world is full of fair weather friends. We need to emulate the loyalty and faith of David and and of Ittai, a gentile from Gath who pledged his loyalty in life or in death. His commitment to David and his loyal friendship was communicable; it was catching. In spite of the dire circumstances, such loyalty and devotion shines. We live in a troubled time. The world seems to be slipping further from the things of God. Animosity against things Christian is mounting. The world economies and societies seem to be imploding. Yet even in times of trial, the Christian ought to reaffirm his commitment and loyalty to Christ. Others promote interdependence while still others call for total dependence. Each side positions itself; spouting the advantages of their position while postulating the disadvantages of the others. What results is the visceral and vitriolic war of words between pundits. As Americans we cherish our independence. Yet God wants us to be dependent upon Him. Too often we find that we are straining and yearning for independence when what is needed is dependency; to be specific dependency on God and not upon human governments or ideologies. Churches become stagnant pools of religious activity and proclivities that suit more the whims of those attending than that which God desires. The air becomes stale; filled with the redundancies of religious rhetoric rather than the Spirit’s movement in their midst. God used Isaiah and Jeremiah to speak to the nation of Israel about these issues. Can it be that we are seeking to displace our dependence upon God with independence or interdependence? Are we forsaking the Fountain of Living Waters for the stale waters of leaking cisterns? It’s Food for thought.

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Jeremiah 2:13

Just what is faith? Is it a blind leap into the unknown, a course of action that flies in the face of evidences that seems to indicate that it is an unreasonable course of action? No. Faith in Jesus Christ is not built upon fallacies but reasonable and cognizant conclusions that Jesus is indeed the Son of God. He fulfills the prophecies of Scripture with such precision as to leave no doubt. He did die on the cross as taught not just in Scripture, but recorded by secular as well as Christian historians, both modern and ancient. In the Bible record, Jesus predicted his resurrection following His crucifixion. The witness of the Bible states that this happened. Secular historians also record that an event took place that shook the world and caused the rapid expansion of Christianity. Faith is a commitment placed in something or someone. It is a trust.
